Water Grams to Cups
1 cup of water weighs about 237 grams. Because 1 ml of water weighs 1 g, grams and milliliters of water are the same number.
Tip: 1 ml of water weighs 1 g, so a 236.6 ml US cup weighs about 237 g.
One US cup of water holds 236.6 ml and weighs about 237 g, because 1 ml of water weighs 1 g. To convert grams of water to cups, divide by 237, so 500 g = 2 cups + 2 tablespoons. A metric cup is 250 ml, so it holds 250 g of water.

Cups of water to grams
Water is the one ingredient where grams = milliliters
At room temperature, 1 milliliter of water weighs 1 gram. That makes water the easiest conversion of all, and it’s how bakers measure water for bread: they put the bowl on a scale and pour.
| Water | Milliliters | US cups |
|---|---|---|
| 50 g | 50 ml | about 3 ½ tbsp |
| 100 g | 100 ml | ⅓ cup + 1 ½ tbsp |
| 237 g | 237 ml | 1 cup |
| 250 g | 250 ml | 1 cup + 1 tbsp |
| 500 g | 500 ml | 2 cups + 2 tbsp |
| 1,000 g | 1 liter | about 4 ¼ cups |
Why other liquids don’t match exactly
Other liquids have different densities, so a cup of them weighs a little more or less than 237 g:
- Milk: about 244 g per cup.
- Honey: about 339 g per cup, much heavier.
- Vegetable oil: lighter than water, about 198 g per cup (King Arthur).
Weighing water for bread
Bread recipes often give water as a percentage of the flour weight (the “hydration”). A 70% hydration dough with 500 g of flour needs 350 g of water, which is 1 ½ cups. Weighing the water is more accurate than reading a measuring cup, and because grams equal milliliters, a measuring jug marked in milliliters works too.
For pints, quarts and gallons, see cups in a quart.
