How Many Grams in a Cup?
It depends on the ingredient. A US cup holds about 125 g of flour, 200 g of sugar, 227 g of butter and 237 g of water.
Tip: Spoon flour into the cup and level it with a knife. Scooping straight from the bag packs in up to 30 g extra.
There's no single number of grams in a cup, because a cup measures volume and grams measure weight. One US cup (236.6 ml) weighs about 125 g of all-purpose flour, 200 g of granulated sugar, 220 g of packed brown sugar, 227 g of butter, 237 g of water and 244 g of milk. Use the ingredient's own weight per cup.

Why there’s no single answer
A cup is a measure of space. How much a cup weighs depends on how heavy the ingredient is for its size (its density) and how much air gets trapped in it:
- Light, airy ingredients like flour, cocoa and oats weigh less than 130 g per cup.
- Granular ingredients like sugar and rice weigh 180–220 g per cup.
- Liquids and fats like water, milk and butter weigh about 230–245 g per cup.
- Thick, dense liquids like honey weigh much more, about 339 g per cup.
US cup vs metric cup
The chart uses the US customary cup, 236.6 ml. Recipes from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK often use a metric cup of 250 ml, which holds about 6% more. To convert, multiply the US figure by 1.057, or switch the converter above to Metric 250 ml.
The weights come from USDA FoodData Central and King Arthur Baking’s ingredient weight chart; the source for each one is on how we calculate.
