How to measure ½ cup without a ½ cup measure

Use two ¼ cups, or 8 level tablespoons. For butter, one US stick is exactly ½ cup.

½ cup for dry and liquid ingredients

For flour, sugar and other dry ingredients, use a dry measuring cup and level the top with a knife. For water, milk and oil, use a clear liquid measuring cup and fill to the ½ cup line. Both hold the same volume, 118 ml, but a dry cup is easier to level and a liquid cup is easier to pour from.

US vs metric cup

This page uses the US cup (236.6 ml). If your recipe is from Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the UK, it probably uses the 250 ml metric cup, so ½ cup there is 125 ml and holds about 6% more. Switch the converter to Metric 250 ml for those recipes.
